Iconic Australian play comes to TraralgonThe word is out! The much loved play ‘Hotel Sorrento’ is coming to Latrobe Performing Arts Centre this month as part of its forthcoming national fifteen-week tour. By Latrobe City Council - 14th March 2006 - Back to News This award-winning play, written by acclaimed playwright Hannie Rayson, tells the story of three sisters who grew up together in seaside Sorrento.
Latrobe City’s performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said she is thrilled to have the play in Latrobe City. "Hotel Sorrento is a landmark Australian play in its fourth production with leading Australian theatre company HIT Productions. The play is also HIT’s 25th tour since the company first began touring in 1999.
"The story revolves around three sisters who are reunited after ten years apart, who then again feel the constraints of family life and all the dramas that eventuate," Kathleen said.
"Hilary still lives in the family home in Sorrento with her father and 16-year-old son. Pippa, an up and coming advertising agency executive, now living in New York, comes home for a long overdue visit; and Meg, a successful writer in England, feels homesick so she too decides to return home."
Cast members of the TV series ‘Neighbours’ have been reunited in the play in starring roles. Kevin Harrington and Marcella Russo who starred alongside one another as the much loved husband and wife team, David and Liljana Bishop, in their long running roles on Neighbours, will be alongside one another once again. This time they are on stage as part of a wonderful ensemble cast of eight which also includes; John Flaus, Celia de Burgh, Jane Nolan and Beverley Dunn (Bellbird), along with Roger Oakley (Tom Fletcher - Home and Away), and Jared Daperis (Round the Twist).
Hotel Sorrento director Bruce Myles, who has a distinguished career and recently directed ‘Wallflowering’ for HIT, said this is a brand new production with a more edgier and contemporary feel.
"Hannie Rayson wanted to create a sweet pensive sadness to pervade the experience as there is something delectable about melancholy which seems to alter the way we see things. This is the tone in the writing she has captured exquisitely, and is the great attraction of the play for me." Bruce explained.
Hotel Sorrento will be performed at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, located at the corner of Breed and Grey Streets Traralgon, on Monday 27 March at 8pm.
Ticket prices are: adult $35, concession $30, groups of 10 or more $32, and students $18.
