Four new fitness stations that are being unveiled this week, in Churchill, Traralgon, Morwell and Moe; may mean that not only the world’s leading athletes are going to be at their fitness peak during the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, but the wider Latrobe community.

At the unveiling of the new Churchill fitness station on Monday, Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said communities across Latrobe will now be able to benefit from improved levels of fitness by regularly using the new fitness apparatus installed in each of the four towns.

Each fitness station consists of six pieces of apparatus including; arched monkey bars and chin-up bars, designed to strengthen the upper body; log jumps designed to strengthen the legs and torso; a sit-up/push-up stations and parallel bars designed to strengthen the upper body; and balance beams designed to improve balance.

"These fitness stations provide many opportunities for the community to participate in a physical activity that is fun and easy to use," Cr Price said.

"Residents can use the fitness equipment at any time of the day and progress with their exercise routine at their own chosen pace."

Located next to walking tracks the fitness stations allow communities to use the equipment when it is convenient for them; providing an enjoyable break perhaps, to their regular walking routine.

Each fitness station site has easy to read instruction boards that contain easy to understand instructions as well as diagrams. The instruction boards also feature artwork from local high school students.

In Morwell, the artwork has been prepared by students from Kurnai Morwell Campus; in Moe, Lowanna Secondary College; and in Traralgon, the Traralgon Secondary College, Junior Campus.

Kurnai College Churchill campus students - Jayne Day and Matt Smart, prepared the artwork for the Churchill boards. It features a colourful representation of a community actively engaged in physical activity perhaps leading them to their own reward of ‘winning gold at the Games’.

"Involving local students in creating the artwork has been a terrific initiative to get young people involved in their own communities, to contribute towards the project, and to form relationships with the community at large," Cr Price said.

"This project has been initiated because of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, and is another indication that the legacy of these Games will be around for many years. In a few weeks the Games will have gone, but our community will be able to enjoy these fitness stations for many years to come;" Cr Price said.

Funding of the $40,000 all age fitness stations has been undertaken through a $20,000 allocation from Latrobe City and a $20,000 contribution through the State Government’s ‘Get Involved’ grants program.

The new fitness stations are to be found in Mathison Park, Churchill; the Botanical Gardens in Moe; between Waterhole Creek and Burnside Drive in Morwell; and in the Kay Street Gardens opposite the RSL in Traralgon.
