Hall Seeks Guarantee On Gippsland Duck Season

The Nationals Spokesman for Natural Resources Peter Hall is calling on the State Government to guarantee that duck shooters will able to hunt in Gippsland in 2008.

By The Nationals - 29th August 2007 - Back to News

Mr Hall has written to the new Minister for Environment Gavin Jennings to seek clarification of Melbourne Labor’s policy on the continuation of duck shooting.

"The drought conditions this year prevented any duck hunting but with the recent floods there should be no reason why Gippsland in particular, should not have a return to normal arrangements in 2008," Mr Hall said.

"Obviously, the conditions around Victoria continue to remain dry in many areas and the government will need to make an assessment closer to the date. But at the very least, the entire area east of Melbourne should be able to host a duck hunting season in 2008.

"I believe the new Minister needs to issue a clear statement of policy to allay any concerns from recreational hunters that their sport will be subject to bans in the future."

Mr Hall said he was a strong supporter of duck hunting as a legitimate sport and recreational activity with significant economic benefits to regional areas.

"A well-administered duck hunting season is both environmental sustainable and economically desirable for regional Victoria," Mr Hall said.

"The hunters make a contribution to the regional economy and there is a strong tradition in many families that should be allowed to continue in the future.

"I urge the government to make decisions regarding duck hunting on scientific evidence and resist the emotional rhetoric of anti-shooting organizations that continue to lobby Melbourne Labor MPs.

"The Labor Government’s own estimates put the value of duck hunting and other game hunting at $50 million per year to the regional economy with 33,000 licensed game hunters in Victoria participating in the sport."
