Draft Greening Latrobe Plan Exhibited For Public CommentA draft strategic plan to ensure a greener municipality and encourage community ownership of public open space was considered by Council at Monday night’s meeting. By news@gippsland - 8th July 2005 - Back to News The ‘Draft Greening Latrobe Strategic Plan’ will be available for public comment from Monday next week.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that Greening Latrobe was a community initiative to protect remnant bush, co-ordinate the revegetation of cleared areas, particularly with locally indigenous plantings, and provide community access to the most up-to-date information about planting and funding.
"Greening Latrobe will strategically plan where revegetation works occur around the municipality. Currently these works occur on an ad hoc basis, but the draft policy will allow Council to work with and co-ordinate, support and extend the works of many individual landholders, community groups, organisations and businesses, who are already undertaking revegetation works around the City," Cr Lougheed explained.
"At a community forum held in June last year, there was widespread support for the initiative from representatives of over 60 community groups actively involved in revegetation projects around the municipality," Cr Lougheed said.
"Council itself is already involved in some revegetation works including National Tree Planting days, plantings to offset carbon emissions from Council’s vehicle fleet, and plantings to offset removal of native vegetation caused by works such as road alignment changes.
"Greening Latrobe will ensure a more efficient way of co-ordinating Council’s work along with community projects, with the aim of ensuring a greener municipality and encouraging community ownership of open spaces, creeks, rivers and reserves.
"It is a policy of Council to maintain and enhance biodiversity within the municipality. Greening Latrobe promotes this very policy as well as taking into account Council’s areas of responsibility such as weed control, offset planting, long term protection of vegetation, and fire risk," Cr Lougheed said.
Latrobe City’s Sustainability and Environment Officer, Penny Mules, said that the revegetation of the Becks Bridge reserve in Moe was the type of project that would in future be embraced by Greening Latrobe.
"That particular project involves clearing weeds and rubbish, and planting trees and understorey plants at the Becks Bridge road reserve and oxbow lake. Community groups and individuals will plant trees in the reserve on Sunday 31 July as part of National Tree Planting Day," Ms Mules explained.
Ms Mules explained that projects outlined in Greening Latrobe would include development of local seed collection, expansion of existing bushland areas, community education and the direct seeding of sites to be revegetated.
"By collecting locally indigenous seeds we can ensure our revegetation efforts will result in substantially higher success rates as these plants are directly adapted to our area," Ms Mules said.
"Revegetation plans will focus on endangered grasslands north of Traralgon, along waterways, particularly around Lake Narracan and the Latrobe River, and in supplementary plantings in partially wooded Council owned blocks in the Strzeleckis," Ms Mules explained.
Cr Lougheed added that Greening Latrobe strategies complement a number of Council’s policies, including Latrobe 2021. It also generates the framework for meeting other native vegetation targets set by bodies such as the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
"Greening Latrobe will also engender better cooperation between Council, stakeholder organisations and the community, and it will obtain the best result for the environment and the future of Latrobe City," Cr Lougheed concluded.
The Draft Greening Latrobe Strategic Plan will be on display at Council’s Service Centres and on Latrobe’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au for public comment from Monday 11 July. Written submissions should be made to Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell no later than 5pm on Friday 12 August.
