Council To Help Local Hero Siddle Receive Recognition

Following a request from the Latrobe Cricket Club, Morwell, Council has agreed in principle to change the name of the Number 1 Oval at the Maryvale Reserve to ‘The Peter Siddle Oval’.

Latrobe City will now write to the Registrar of Geographic Names requesting an exemption to the principle that a landmark should not be named after a person still living.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Council will seek the exemption as Peter Siddle is the only Latrobe City resident to have played test cricket for Australia and receive the coveted Baggy Green Test Cap.

"It is an amazing achievement to play test cricket for your country and Peter’s cricketing career recently reached its highest point with his hat trick against England.

"Peter is very proud of his Latrobe City heritage and the Central Gippsland Cricket Association named their elite junior squad the ‘Peter Siddle Development Squad’. Latrobe Cricket Club believe changing the name of the oval would help to increase cricket participation rates amongst juniors, which is something Council is eager to support, as Peter’s achievements are a clear example for other young cricketers to strive to emulate.

"I’m also certain that Peter would be honoured to have the oval’s named changed and Latrobe City will do all it can to ensure this happens," Cr White concluded.
