Keep Australia Beautiful Judges at Pet ExpoThe first weekend in May, the judges from Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) are out looking for Victoria’s cleanest beaches. As part of their itinerary, they will be stopping by the San Remo foreshore, By Bass Coast - 10th May 2012 - Back to News to visit the Bass Coast Pet Expo.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Manager, Steven Piasente, said there was a clear connection between the KABV awards and the Expo.
"Our Community Safety rangers entered their "Dog Owners Do The Right Thing" campaign into this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful awards," explained Mr Piasente.
"The campaign was part of a proactive education and incentive program that was trying to reduce the negative impact from pet dogs on public parks and beaches. The Judges are coming along to the Expo to meet the Rangers and get a first hand look at the work they do to promote responsible pet ownership in our community. Our Rangers are keen to talk to the Judges and show them how the campaign helped to make our beaches cleaner and more environmentally-friendly places to visit."
Mr Piasente said pet owner education is a routine part of being a Ranger, but the team has really concentrated on the best way to help owners ‘do the right thing’.
"During the campaign over the summer, our Rangers gave out gift vouchers as rewards to dog owners who were cleaning up after their pets," said Mr Piasente.
"We also handed out dog leads and dog poo bag pouches to owners, to help owners understand what is expected when they take their pets out in public places. Our Community Rangers aim to keep Bass Coast beaches safe, clean and beautiful - and memorable for the right reasons!"
The 2011 winner of the ‘Clean Beach of the Year’ title was Frankston Foreshore. This year’s winners of the KABV Clean Beaches Awards will be announced in Melbourne on Friday, 27 July 2012.
