Council scores coup with WNBL basketball tournament

Victoria’s Wellington Shire Council has scored a sports coup for Gippsland and the State, announcing that it is to host a major pre-season Women’s National Basketball League tournament featuring top Australian sides and the New Zealand national team.

It will be the first time a basketball tournament of this magnitude has been staged in Gippsland, with Wellington hosting the event thanks to the campaigning efforts of its Leisure Services team – in particular Administration & Marketing Co-ordinator Russell Thomas.

The competition will be staged from 18 to 21 September at the Catholic College Sale’s new state-of-the-art stadium facilities, with Heyfield also hosting a game. Teams participating include Bulleen, Dandenong, Canberra, Townsville and the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport), along with New Zealand’s Tall Ferns Basketball Teams.

As well as having the rare opportunity to watch these top flight teams battle it out on the court, the community will also be able to watch open training sessions, as well as having the chance to participate in coaching clinics run by some of Australia and New Zealand’s elite female basketball players.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Hosting this prestigious event is great news for the Council and the Shire, and shows that when it comes to staging major sports events we can compete with the best.

"The tournament is certain to attract a great deal of interest and support from the people of Wellington and from much further afield, with the local economy and tourism also set to benefit."
