Greening Latrobe steering committee to form

By Latrobe Shire Council - 28th June 2004 - Back to News

A public forum held last Thursday to thank those involved in vegetation restoration works in the municipality and to gauge support for interconnecting native vegetation corridors, resulted in the initialisation of a steering committee for ‘Greening Latrobe’

More than seventy people attended the Greening Latrobe community forum at the Italian Australian Sporting Club representing a wide range of community and industry groups.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, presented certificates of appreciation to representatives of the many groups who have already undertaken revegetation and native vegetation protection works in the municipality.

"Landcare groups, local schools, reserve committees, friends groups, Apex, Lions and Rotary clubs have all been involved in planting and protecting native vegetation for the benefit of us all," Cr White said.

"This has been hands-on work not merely acknowledging the need for a better environment, but getting hands dirty and undertaking it for the benefit of the whole community. I am delighted that Council is able to recognise their efforts in some small way by awarding certificates of appreciation. Their commitment to the environment is commendable," Cr White said.

After the presentations, Sustainability and Environment Strategy Officer, Fiona Fullard, introduced ‘Greening Latrobe’ as a Latrobe City initiative to help coordinate all the revegetation works undertaken by the groups so far, and link them together.

"The Greening Latrobe program aims to facilitate and encourage community groups to participate in further vegetation restoration," Ms Fullard explained.

"The forum discussed how the environment would benefit from further work linking all past revegetation works. Those present at the forum identified and mapped areas in Latrobe City which have already had revegetation works carried out on them.

"They also identified areas which were perceived as important to revegetate and protect in the future," Ms Fullard said.

"By connecting areas of native vegetation through corridors, we will reduce the effects of fragmentation and isolation on our biodiversity.

"The forum resulted in substantial support for addressing these works, which will not only benefit the environment, but also beautify Latrobe, offset our greenhouse gas emissions, improve primary production, increase our tourism potential and improve the health and well-being of the community. As a result, the steering committee was formed," Ms Fullard added.

Residents who are interested in joining the Greening Latrobe steering committee, or would like to learning more about the ‘Greening Latrobe’ initiative, should contact Fiona Fullard, Sustainability and Environment Strategy Officer, telephone 5128 5633.
