Bass Coast Gears Up For Cup WeekendBass Coast is set for an influx of visitors over the Melbourne Cup weekend in November. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 22nd October 2007 - Back to News "A wide variety of events are taking place across the Shire on Cup weekend," said Mr Angarane.
"People take advantage of the holiday on Melbourne Cup Day to have an unofficial long weekend, so we are expecting a lot of visitors between 2 and 6 November."
Events held in the Shire can have an impact on local residents and people using the roads, particularly on Phillip Island.
"It is good to be aware of what is happening, so you can factor these events into your travel plans," said Mr Angarane.
"On Sunday 4 November, the Chill Island Music Festival will be taking place.
"It’s a family festival with a quality line up of bands and Phillip Island Road will be affected by the traffic coming onto Churchill Island," Mr Angarane explained.
"Peak traffic times are expected between 11.30am and 1.30pm, as the gates open at midday, and then from 7pm onwards, when the event finishes."
Mr Angarane said people were being encouraged to use alternative methods of getting to Churchill Island.
"There is good pedestrian and cycling access onto the Island, and shuttle bus services will be running from Cowes and San Remo," said Mr Angarane.
"Details of the shuttle bus service are available from Phillip Island Bus Lines on 5952 2500.
"If you aren’t planning on going to Chill Island, we’d recommend trying to stay clear of that area during the peak traffic times."
Mr Angarane also advised a number of rallies would take place on Phillip Island over the Cup Weekend.
"The Harley Owners Group rally is being held on Phillip Island from 2 - 5 November," said Mr Angarane.
"On Saturday 3 November, they will be doing a rally around the Island from 10am, arriving into The Esplanade in Cowes at midday.
"The group will be doing a ‘show and shine’ display in The Esplanade, so anyone interested in Harley Davidson bikes shouldn’t miss this chance to see them up close."
The Triumph Sports Owners Association National Rally will also be on Phillip Island over the weekend.
"The cars will be doing a ‘show and shine’ on The Esplanade from 10am on Sunday 4 November," said Mr Angarane.
"Also happening on Sunday is the San Remo Fishing Village Festival.
"This is a family festival on the San Remo Foreshore from 9am until 4pm," said Mr Angarane.
"There will displays from the CFA, SES, Parks Victoria and Victorian Fisheries.
"There will also be historic cars, musical entertainment, food and refreshments, an animal farm, Go Karts, amusements, vendors and a sea food platter spinning wheel."
