New Solar Lights On The Island

New solar lighting systems at Newhaven and Rhyll boat ramps means improved safety and access for boat ramp users.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th April 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, said the lighting systems were immediately above the fish cleaning area. This means it is easier to see when washing and cleaning catches and it has improved safety when launching and retrieving boats.

"It would have been impractical to connect these lighting systems to grid electricity. It would have required additional infrastructure like power poles or underground powerlines," explained Mr Smith.

"The solar lighting systems are a fantastic initiative as they are stand alone units."

The solar panels convert direct sunlight into energy. This generates enough current to power the lights without any electricity from the grid.

"The project was funded by a $10,000 grant from Marine Safety Victoria and $10,000 from Council," Mr Smith said.

"The new solar lighting systems are easy to install. They don’t require external connection and provide great environmental, social and economic benefits to the community, even on a relatively small project like this.

"Previously, both boat ramps had no lighting installed, so the new solar lights improve safety. They also improve access as the ramps can be used more at night due to better visibility."

The grant was awarded to Council by the Victorian Government under the Boating Safety and Facilities Program 2008 – 2009.
