The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed $644,000 funding to reduce sediment impacts on the Gippsland Lakes.

Mr Ingram, a long-time campaigner on restoring the health of the Gippsland Lakes, said the contribution will fund a project facilitated by the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.

"This project will address gully erosion and tunnel erosion in the Mitchell and Tambo catchments," Mr Ingram said.

"I welcome any funding for projects that will assist in protecting the health of our region’s most spectacular asset and I will continue to lobby state and federal governments to provide our agencies with the necessary money to conduct these valuable works."

Mr Ingram recently facilitated a major debate in the Victorian Parliament on the health and future directions of the Gippsland Lakes.

"The Gippsland Lakes are one of our region’s greatest assets -- not just environmentally, but also as an economic asset through tourism, lifestyle and recreation as an iconic asset as part of our regional branding," Mr Ingram said.

The project will be conducted in partnership with local landholders on freehold land within the Mitchell and Tambo catchments.
