significant recent rain in catchments and high river flows.

Currently more than 1,200 million litres of water (roughly equivalent to 1,200 Olympic-size swimming pools) are available in storages across the region. This compares favorably to the same time last year when 1,100 million litres were in storage and no restrictions were subsequently required for the duration of summer.

The situation has been further boosted by the new storage basin and water treatment plant at Woodglen, north west of Bairnsdale, recently brought on-line to bolster supplies to some 24,000 people served by the Mitchell River water supply system.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Acting Managing Director, Brett Millington: "These latest storage figures are very encouraging as we head through spring, topping up our water stocks in preparation for summer when the demands on our water supplies are traditionally heaviest.

"With no water restrictions in place, customers can be confident in their use of water around the property, both in the home and garden. The simple reminder is that Permanent Water Saving Rules apply across Victoria, with commonsense measures for us all to follow."

Under Permanent Water Saving Rules:

· Hand held hoses can be used at any time to wash a car and to water lawns and gardens. They must always be fitted with a trigger nozzle;

· Manual and automatic watering systems can be used between 6pm and 10am daily on residential and commercial gardens. They can be used between 8pm and 10am daily on public gardens and sports grounds.

More information about the rules can be found on East Gippsland Water’s website www.egwater.vic.gov.au or by calling 1300 720 700. In addition, information leaflets are available from the Corporation’s Bairnsdale office at 133 Macleod Street.
