A petition with hundreds of signatures calling for the State Government to provide funding to Gippsland Carers Association (GCA) to continue its valuable work has been tabled in Parliament by Member for Morwell Russell Northe.

Mr Northe tabled the petition this week, supported by Member for Narracan, Gary Blackwood.

Mr Northe said the petition has been signed by people across Gippsland, and it sends a clear message to the Andrews Labor Government that our community supports the work that GCA does.

"GCA services some of the region’s must vulnerable families in need, and unless funding is provided by the State Government these services will be severely impacted," Mr Northe said.

"It is disgraceful that Labor has not only cut the funding, but is not prepared to reconsider its stance.

"The former Liberal National Coalition Government provided $100,000 for GCA during its term of Government and had pledged $120,000 to continue to support GCA in the work it undertakes within the Gippsland community," he said.

"The $120,000 commitment would have assisted with the employment of staff, including a carer mentor, which would have made a huge difference to the lives of families who care for persons with a disability and special needs."

Mr Blackwood said the decision by the Andrews Labor Government to cut funding would mean less time for Gippsland Carers Association to assist carers and more time spent seeking donations to continue their work.

"The GCA will now be forced to rely again solely on the generosity of donations to keep its doors open and to deliver the exceptional service it does to local carers," said Mr Blackwood.

"That is a devastating outcome for an organisation who has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of carers across the region and it could easily be addressed if the Andrews Labor Government reversed its position and supported the Association.

"We are urging the Andrews Labor Government to support our carers here in Gippsland and commit to funding this outstanding program as a priority," Mr Blackwood said.
