Schools Gear Up For Bike EdSchools across Bass Coast will benefit from the latest Bike Ed Instructors course held at Bass Valley Primary School in the last week of Term 2. By Bass Coast - 17th July 2014 - Back to News Chair of the Bass Coast Community Road Safety Committee, Bass Coast Shire Councillor Andrew Phillips, said the additional nine instructors would play a part in ensuring Bike Ed students gain the skills they need to ride safely and independently on roads and paths.
"I’d like to congratulate the four teachers, two parents and three volunteers from the Phillip Island Bicycle User Group (BUG) who completed the course," Cr Phillips said.
"New Bike Ed instructors ensure staffing levels remain high and students receive the support they need as they learn practical bicycle riding skills and the importance of road safety.
"During the sessions, students also learn about bike roadworthiness and Victorian road regulations."
Don Turner, a member of the Bass Coast Community Road Safety Committee and BUG, organised the Instructors course.
"Bike Ed has been operating in Bass Coast for a number of years," Mr Turner explained.
"We now have 10 of the 11 primary schools with high level Bike Ed programs.
"As a result, hundreds of students have participated in this valuable road safety program.
"Newhaven Primary is the latest school to run a Bike Ed program for students, during the last weeks of Term 2.
"This culminated in a successful ride by the Year 5 and 6 students, teachers and helpers, from the school to Churchill Island and return, via the Newhaven Park."
Cr Phillips commended the involvement of BUG volunteers who assist as many as seven schools with their Bike Ed programs.
Cr Phillips said the instructors’ course and refresher course were possible due to Safe Cycling funding received from VicRoads under the Victorian Community Road Safety Partnership Program.
"I’m very pleased to say, the Bass Coast Community Road Safety Committee has received further funds to run another Bike Ed Instructor course in 2014-2015," Cr Phillips said.
"The committee has also been successful in receiving funding for its motorcycle program during the Moto GP and Superbikes events, and new funding for an innovative program called Safe to School.
"Working together with Victoria Police, Council, three Bass Coast schools and the local community, the program will identify safe routes to allow children to walk and ride to school, and be supported by a greater visible presence by Victoria Police and Council’s Local Laws team."
