Three Gippsland councils have committed to take part in the project which will see local government build on its existing water conservation initiatives by identifying where further savings could be made.

Gippsland Water will assist Latrobe City and Wellington Shire Council with the development of water conservation plans for buildings, parks, gardens and sporting fields, and identify possible alternate supplies to replace the use of potable water. Baw Baw Shire Council was involved in the first round of the program and is currently in the process of developing a draft plan.

The Sustainable Water Use Plans Program for Regional Local Government is a Victorian Government initiative under the Our Water Our Future Action Plan to secure the future of Victoria’s water.

The program aims to achieve real water savings, and offers grants of up to $10,000 to regional councils to develop and implement action plans for its assets and facilities. Plans will be created by December 2006.

Gippsland Water’s Chief Executive Officer, John Mitchell said, "This is a great opportunity for local councils to lead by example when it comes to water conservation in their communities. Gippsland Water is pleased to be able to work in partnership with local industry, business and government to achieve ongoing water saving results."
