Public Presentation – Inverloch Concept Designs

Melbourne University students will present a series of new designs for facilities and areas in Inverloch and the foreshore as part of their first year graduate studies.

The projects have been developed as part of a landscape architectural design studio, Site Planning and Design. It is a first year graduate subject at the Melbourne School of Design Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.

The students have developed eight different concept designs and will use physical and virtual models to talk about them. The projects include:

  • a bike path network
  • a re-design of the Civic Centre forecourt
  • a re-design of the Glade reserve
  • a water-sensitive design for a portion of Ayr Creek
  • an interpretive walkway along the old sea-wall
  • a re-design of Williams Street
  • a series of playscapes beside the fitness stations near the beach
  • a reconfiguration of the main oval and associated buildings

The presentation will be held on Thursday 23 October at the Inverloch Civic Centre from 6.30 – 7.30pm and all are welcome.

Renewal Program For Local Roads

Bass Coast Shire Council’s annual sealing program for select roads is underway.

Council’s Infrastructure Maintenance Manager, Fred Mazyrko, said the work was being undertaken in conjunction with contractors, Sprayline.

"The resealing work happens every year," explained Mr Mazyrko.

"The aim is to preserve and prolong the life of older roads. This year, we will treat approximately 83,300 square metres of existing sealed roads in urban and rural areas."

This year’s program includes roads in Ventnor, Cowes, Newhaven, Phillip Island, Kilcunda and Inverloch.

"We expect the work will start in late October or early November," Mr Mazyrko said.

"Work should be completed by the end of December, weather permitting.

"Letters will be sent to residents directly affected by the works. The contractor will give advance notice of when they will be in their street."

Cyclists Recognised for Fundraising Efforts

Bass Coast Shire Council made a special presentation at the October Council Meeting to four Inverloch residents who rode across the Nullarbor.

The group rode from Perth to Inverloch to raise funds for the Gippsland Rotary Centenary House, a cancer patient residential accommodation facility linked to the LaTrobe Valley Hospital. Mark Malone, Mark Haines and Brian Martin rode from Perth to Adelaide. Barry Zimmermann joined the ride in Adelaide, taking over from Mr Haines, who had been scheduled to undergo surgery.

The four men raised over $35,000 and donations are continuing to come in.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, praised the men for their effort.

"These men took one month to make that trip with only one day off," marvelled Cr Goodwin.

"The whole trip was self funded, included the purchase of the bikes, worth $3,600 each.

"It is dangerous enough crossing the Nullabor in car, let alone on bikes and they did it without support staff. It is a magnificent effort."

The trip attracted considerable media interest along the way and the local community were kept well informed of their progress.

"The level of support for this trip has been amazing," Cr Goodwin said.

"A number of individuals have contributed $1,000 or more.

"We are extremely proud of the achievements of these men and are very lucky to have them as part of our community."

Michael Malone and Mark Haines attended the Council Meeting to receive the certificates of appreciation presented by Council for all four men.
