Privilege For Bass Coast Youth

Businesses throughout Bass Coast are being urged to support young people by getting behind the Bass Coast Youth Privilege Card.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News

The Youth Privilege Card is an initiative of the Bass Coast Youth Council. It will be available to Bass Coast residents aged between 12-25 years of age for use across the Shire.

Council’s Family, Youth & Children’s Service Coordinator Faye Stewart said the card will provide discounts/offers to young people, who are often on limited incomes.

"The obvious aim of the card is to encourage young people to shop locally," said Ms Stewart.

"But there are benefits that go way beyond that, for both the youth and businesses that get involved in the project.

"The card will have an economic benefit for local businesses," continued Ms Stewart.

"Increased revenue spent within the community could create opportunities for youth employment."

Ms Stewart said businesses that were involved in the project would also benefit by being promoted across the shire.

"The card and the brochure will be given out to young people from all over Bass Coast," said Ms Stewart.

"Hopefully this will generate regular visits by young people to these businesses.

"It will also promote a positive image for supporting youth initiatives."

The ATM sized card displays the Bass Coast Youth Council logo and an expiry date on the front. The reverse will list important help and emergency phone numbers and youth websites. The card will be attached to a brochure displaying businesses supporting the initiative.

Ms Stewart said that participating businesses will be supplied with a sticker/sign that states, "Our business supports the Youth Privilege Card".

"This way, young people and other members of the community can easily identify the businesses supporting youth initiatives," said Ms Stewart.

"Response to-date has been extremely positive but additional business support would certainly enhance the project."

The aim is to have the cards available the first week in August. Relevant forms and information can be obtained from Faye Stewart, Family, Youth & Children’s Services Coordinator on 56712 479 or alternatively email f.stewart@basscoast.vic.gov.au.
