Mayor Encourages Citizens To Attend

East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Harvey Bates, is encouraging local communities to support the various Australia Day activities being held throughout the region next Monday, 26 January.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 20th January 2004 - Back to News

Council has provided funding to six events Shire-wide at Omeo, Orbost, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Paynesville and Lindenow, with Councillors in attendance at all venues.

"Australia Day is an important day in the calendar and locally it’s a chance to see several people and groups recognised for their achievements," Cr Bates said.

"Awards will be presented during ceremonies at each of the towns, as well as the East Gippsland Shire-wide awards which will this year be presented at Lakes Entrance.

"The three Shire-wide categories this year are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

"Our official Ambassador this year is Dan Romanis, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal District Nursing Service, and he will attend the Lakes Entrance ceremony," Cr Bates said.

Mr Romanis has been CEO of the RDNS since 1994. The RDNS is Australia’s largest provider of home nursing and the largest employer of community nurses with a staff of over 1,000.

He has an experienced background in the health industry and in 2003 was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through the RDNS.

Cr Bates said Australia Day celebrations will take on extra significance at Omeo this year.

"Last year Omeo and surrounding areas were feeling the full force of the devastating bushfires on Australia Day – there was hardly any time to celebrate as many families were on full alert.

"Therefore this year, with financial support from the State Government, we’ve organised a special event in conjunction with the Omeo Business and Tourism Association.

"The event – ‘Omeo Moving On’ – will feature live music, children’s activities, the unveiling of a plaque, free barbecue lunch and much more.

"It’s a way of saying thanks to all the volunteers who have been involved in the fire itself and the recovery since – and Omeo is quite an appropriate place to host it because the fires significantly impacted on the township and surrounding areas," Cr Bates said.
