Safer crossing for students

Trafalgar school students will cross the Princes Highway safely from the train station following a Baw Baw Shire Council decision to employ a crossing supervisor at the pedestrian crossing.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 9th August 2006 - Back to News

The Department of Education, Trafalgar Secondary School and Trafalgar Community Development Association have had a shared concern regarding the safety of students using the Princes Highway pedestrian crossing, according to council chief executive officer Glenn Patterson.

"Approximately 275 students travel by train to and from the school each day and we have been informed that there have been a number of unreported near misses," said Mr Patterson.

"Council resolved at its meeting last week to authorise the appointment of a crossing supervisor to the pedestrian crossing and to allow for funds in the 2006/07 budget.

"The supervisor will start when the VFT project is complete and the students start to use the crossing again," said Mr Patterson.

The appointment of a school-crossing supervisor will complement the technology recently installed by VicRoads that can detect the presence of pedestrians and regulate the traffic light cycle.

The supervisor will regulate the number of pedestrians crossing at any one time and ensure that the students are only entering the crossing when it is safe to do so.

VicRoads has advised that a reduced speed zone during school hours is not applicable as the pedestrian crossing is not located within a school zone.
