Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, says it is important that people across the whole of Gippsland, from Orbost to Wonthaggi, from Fish Creek to Icy Creek and from Stratford to Cowes, recognise that this is their Live Site.

"A warm welcome has been extended to all who attend."

"This is a once in a life time opportunity for all Gippslanders to see some amazing talent, whilst sharing the experience of the Commonwealth Games and be ‘united by the moment’," Cr Goodwin said.

The Gippsland Live Site will be located at the Moe Racecourse in the Latrobe Valley, and is one of the four regional Live Sites operating across Victoria during the Commonwealth Games. Regional Live Sites will also operate in Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.

The Live Site, which will operate from 9am – 11pm daily, offers Gippslanders the opportunity to gather with friends and other communities to watch the Games coverage broadcast on big screens and cheer their teams on to Gold.

Festival performances and exhibitions will also be taking place at the Live Site, so it will be the place to be during Commonwealth Games time.

The festival at the Gippsland Live Site not only includes a big screen televising live coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies, and Commonwealth Games action; but includes an impressive line up of international acts, artists and performers, in music, dance and street theatre.

There will be live performers daily, with special themes such as Rock’n’Roll, Salsa, R’n’B, Country Music with Truckn with Tim, and a special selection of international performers such as The African Showboyz, Drum Drum from Papua New Guinea, and the Tongan Defence Force Band.

The announced line up for Friday 24 March 2006 gives an idea of the excitement in store. Acts on the Friday includes the electrifying Kenyan group ‘AfroJambo’ and Melbourne’s own ‘Strange Fruit’, both well renowned world-class acts.

Icarus, one of Australia’s premier stilt-walking acts are set to feature as a roving performance during the day, and spectators can also look forward to live performances by Ravibandu Vidyapathy from Sri Lanka, and Fijian sensations Black Rose who will definitely have the audience jumping with their ‘euro-dance meets pacific reggae’ style of music.

‘Strange Fruit’ performs a breathtaking show above the heads of the audiences from the top of four metre high flexible poles; combining dance, circus, comedy and spectacle - something not to be missed.

The Afro Jambo acrobats, a five member acrobatic troupe from the streets of Nairobi, Kenya; will also dazzle audiences, with amazing displays of limbo dancing, fire-eating, human pyramids and difficult types of rope-skipping.

The performance times announced for Friday 24 March 2006 are:

Fraser Hooper – Afro Jambo/Strange Fruit from 3pm – 4:30pm, and again at 5:45pm – 7pm; Ravi Bandu Vidyapathy 4:30pm – 5:15pm; and Black Rose 9:30pm – 10:30pm. Icarus will provide roaming performances from 5pm – 5:45pm, and from 7pm – 7:45pm.

The Live Site Festival is an integral part of the Melbourne2006 Commonwealth Games and is proudly presented by the Victorian Government in partnership with local government across Gippsland.
