World War I photographs at Lakes Entrance Library/Business Centre

The East Gippsland Shire Library is hosting an exhibition of photographs of Australian campaigns in Flanders and Palestine, 1917 to 1918

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 22nd January 2004 - Back to News

The photographs were taken by Australia’s first Official War Photographer, Frank Hurley, and have been made available @ your Library™ by the State Library of New South Wales.

Hurley lived with the troops and participated in the events he recorded. To better portray war conditions, he began to make "composite pictures", using several negatives to depict a scene. The picture Morning of Passchendaele is a fine example of the power of this technique.

Hurley introduced other innovations to war photography, among them colour and aerial photography.

The exhibition is located at Lakes Entrance Library/Business Centre and will run from 27 January to 12 February.
