Playground Slide To Close

East Gippsland Shire Council will close the Howitt Park playground slide due to risk management issues.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd May 2004 - Back to News

The long wave slide at the playground has deteriorated so much that Council’s playground auditors have recommended that it be removed, as it no longer complies with Australian Standards and cannot be modified to meet these standards.

"Council officers recently inspected the slide and found a number of faults. The timber structure at the top needs to be totally rebuilt; the timber framing on each side that holds the tyres for soft fall needs replacement; and the slide itself is cause for concern with the stainless steel bed lifting away from the fibreglass body," said Group Manager Assets, Phil Davies.

"To repair the slide would be extremely costly and while an immediate replacement slide for the park cannot occur, we will place it on the list of projects needed in the future.

"Safety of Council’s assets, including playgrounds and equipment, is the major factor in the decision to remove the slide," Phil said.
