Gippsland Water Flushes In Support Of World Toilet Day

Gippsland Water’s employees will be flushing out their pockets in support of World Toilet Day on Friday 18 November.

By Gippsland Water - 17th November 2005 - Back to News

The fifth annual World Toilet Day, organised by the World Toilet Organisation (WTO) and supported for the first time by WaterAid Australia, seeks to raise funds to improve sanitation in some of the world’s poorest communities.

To promote World Toilet Day, WaterAid Australia is encouraging water companies, businesses and local councils around Australia to take up a range of fundraising activities.

Around 2.6 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate water sanitation, and over a billion people worldwide are forced to drink contaminated water. For these communities it takes only $170 to pay for the materials for a school sanitation block, and $3000 to $5000 to pay for water, sanitation and hygiene education in a small community.

Gippsland Water’s social club will be coordinating fund raising activities and raising awareness amongst its employees, about the activities undertaken by WTO and WaterAid Australia.

Gippsland Water’s CEO, John Mitchell said "Gippsland Water’s Social Club proactively supports its community through fundraising for different local charities each month. This time, the Social Club is assisting a worthy cause that extends beyond our region, but is one that has a close affiliation with Gippsland Water’s purpose being to provide high quality water, sewerage and waste recovery services.

"Gippsland Water is pleased to be able to support WaterAid Australia and WTO in its efforts to promote international sanitation and water quality issues, and encourages everyone to become involved in World Toilet Day by digging deeply and donating to help the world’s poorest people have access to something we, in Australia, take very much for granted."
