Thirty Taizhou And Takasago Delegates Coming To ASCAApproximately 30 delegates from Latrobe City’s sister cities of Takasago in Japan and Taizhou in China are expected to be attending the Australian Sister Cities Associations (ASCA) national conference. By news@gippsland - 21st June 2005 - Back to News The conference is being held in Latrobe City from 25 to 28 September this year.
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that undertakings towards a high attendance by overseas delegates had been made during the CEO and Mayoral delegation to China and Japan in May.
"We were delighted by the undertakings made by the Taizhou and Takasago communities to sending representatives to ASCA. I’m very pleased to say that in the past couple of weeks those undertakings have been confirmed, and we are now expecting about thirty representatives from the two cities," Cr Lougheed said.
General Manager City Relations, Mark Brady, said delegates from the United States and New Zealand were also among those confirming their interest in attending, together with delegates from all over Australia.
"Latrobe City has long been a staunch supporter and member of the Australian Sister Cities Association (ASCA) and we embrace the association’s ideals that focus on advancing international understanding and tolerance through sister city relationships.
"ASCA is a not for profit organisation which assists its members to establish, maintain and continually improve Sister City relationships and to link people and organisations with similar goals and values. ASCA’s vision is to achieve greater understanding, friendship and community benefit from sister city relationships.
"We were delighted to be selected to host the prestigious 2005 conference which is bringing together people from across Australia, and across the world. The delegates who are making the journey, all have a sincere mutual interest in promoting greater understanding and friendship through sister-city relationships.
"Planning here in Latrobe City is nearing completion and the comprehensive and exciting program being formulated will include cultural workshops, high profile guest speakers and seminars," Mr Brady said.
Cr Lougheed said that during meetings with the mayors of Takasago and Taizhou his counterparts had congratulated Latrobe City on hosting this year’s ASCA conference.
"Administrators in both cities pointed out the importance of strengthening the sister city relationships. Both existing relationships have already brought and will continue to bring outstanding benefits to Latrobe and our sister cities through cultural, educational and business projects and exchanges," Cr Lougheed said.
Mr Brady said that the delegations from Takasago and Taizhou will be staying in Latrobe City for four days. "At the meeting with Mayor Tamura in Takasago City, discussions took place regarding their participation in the conference.
"As a result, part of the cultural workshop on Asia will be presented by one of the Takasago delegates. The delegate will address attendees about the ‘do’s and don’ts’, and the differences in customs and cultural manners between Japan and Australia
"The delegation from Takasago City will also be helping to present this year’s ‘Japanese Day’ being held on Sunday 25 September in Kernot Hall, Morwell.
"Once again this will be a day where the whole Latrobe community can explore and enjoy Japanese food and culture. The Takasago delegation is currently planning some Japanese activities to enhance the experience and develop better understanding of the nation’s vibrant culture," Mr Brady revealed.
"The activities planned include traditional toys, origami, Japanese calligraphy and of course ‘the tea ceremony’. They are also bringing the taste of Bon Dance which is a Japanese traditional folk dance where people dance in a large circle.
"During their visit, the delegations from both Takasago and Taizhou are also planning to visit several facilities in Latrobe City," Mr Brady concluded.
