New Wellington Streetlife project set to begin

By Wellington Shire Council - 22nd October 2004 - Back to News

Wellington Shire’s small-town businesses stand to benefit from development and growth opportunities as part of the council’s latest business development initiative - the Satellite Centres’ Revitalisation project – a StreetLife Small Industry Support Program project.

The council has just appointed part-time project coordinator Darren Randle to work in partnership with a management group to roll-out this program over the coming year. The StreetLife concept was developed through the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development, and links communities and neighbourhood business groups to help small business growth and business centre revitalisation.

The initiative aims to boost the productivity of local retail sectors in Wellington towns including Stratford, Maffra, Heyfield and Rosedale through structured training programs, greater event management and promotion, specific action plans and the strengthening of individual associations and business networks.

The council has also been supporting the Alberton Project for the Yarram district since its inception four years ago which has offered similar opportunities that the StreetLife project will now bring to the shire’s northern towns.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "The shire’s smaller towns are a vital component of our local economy, in terms of maintaining employment opportunities and healthy, local retail communities. The Satellite Centres’ Revitalisation project will give local traders hands-on assistance in their efforts to maintain and grow their businesses.

"Trader groups and Chambers of Commerce will be given the opportunity to put forward ideas through a number of consultation meetings to be held over the coming months, which will then be implemented. At this stage we are conducting research into local businesses to identify how they currently operate and their knowledge of funding and assistance that is available through the council and other government departments.

"What we would like to achieve in the long-term is an increase in employment numbers at a small-town level and enhancing the livelihood of these local traders."
