October Is Immunisation Month Celebrate Immunisation Month by making sure your child’s immunisation is up to date. That is the message from Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environmental Health team. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 12th October 2007 - Back to News Throughout October, the aim is to raise community awareness of the need for immunisation.
"Childhood immunisation protects your children against common diseases that can have very serious side effects," said Council’s Environmental Health Officer, Carl Gheller.
"It is important to ensure that your child follows the immunisation schedule for effective protection against disease in their early years of life and beyond."
Australia has a National Immunisation Schedule. The Federal Government provides funding for vaccine to ensure that all Australian children have access to free vaccination and protection against common childhood diseases. Victorian Primary Schools require proof that a child has had these vaccinations at enrolment time and prior to attendance at school.
"I urge parents to review the immunisation schedule and check to make sure that their child is up date," said Mr Gheller.
"Council provide free monthly immunisation sessions at various venues throughout the Shire."
"And we will be handing out some toys, activity sheets and promotional items at the immunisation sessions throughout October."
Mr Gheller said that it was important to be immunised throughout life and on time.
"Getting this message out to the community is why the Gippsland Immunisation Reference Group (GIRG) organised Immunisation Month," explained Mr Gheller.
"An effective Immunisation Program can reduce the incidence and spread of diseases throughout the community by ensuring that all people are immunised during their early childhood. "
