East Gippsland Shire Council is inviting community members to help shape the future of the Omeo district by sharing their insights, ideas, and priorities. Community feedback - through workshops and a public survey - will inform the development of the Omeo District Place Plan, a practical, easy-to-read guide that brings together the community’s vision and council’s work into one coordinated, action-focused document.

Community voices matter

Mayor Cr John White said place plans are key to ensuring local voices shape the future of their communities. "Place plans are all about the council working together with our communities, especially in our more remote parts of East Gippsland. Our big strategies set the direction, but it’s local voices that shape the really impactful work we do. By listening to what makes your town or district special, we can build on those strengths together."

"Each place plan puts a local lens on council’s work, creating practical actions that reflect what matters most to you. Whether you live in the Omeo district, pass through, or simply care about its future, your input will help us create a strong and vibrant plan," he said.

District place planning

Place plans are central to council’s commitment to place-based planning, ensuring each district’s unique identity and priorities are reflected in future decision-making. The Omeo District Place Plan is the first in a series to be developed progressively across the shire. Each plan is built on detailed community profiling, local research, and district mapping, using a range of engagement tools to gather community feedback and help shape a clear, action-oriented plan.

These plans will help council:

  • Understand community needs at a local level
  • Integrate relevant community priorities in council works and planning
  • Provide a clear framework for community ideas and proposals

For the community, place plans will be the go-to resource for aligning proposals and ideas with council’s existing strategies and plans, helping to strengthen meaningful future engagement with council.  For upcoming community workshop dates and link to the public survey, visit Your Say East Gippsland website.
