South Gippsland Shire Council is offering multiple opportunities for community engagement, upcoming events, free workshops, grants, vaccination sessions, and council services throughout Summer 2026 for residents and local businesses.

South Gippsland Shire Council is providing more opportunities for the community to engage with council like ‘Meet the Mayor.’ Book an appointment to meet with Mayor Hersey to discuss an idea or issue that’s important to you and your local community.

‘Meet the Mayor’ is held on the second Tuesday of every month between 9.00am and 11.00am. Half-hour meetings are available in person at council’s Main Office, 9 Smith Street, Leongatha, or virtually upon request. Please note you will need to complete the booking form using the link below and provide a brief summary of the issue you would like to discuss.

Connect with council

Drop in and have a chat with councillors on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 4 March - Venus Bay
  • Wednesday 3 June - Loch
  • Wednesday 2 September - Port Welshpool

No booking required - just come along on the day. Venue locations will be advertised closer to each date.

Present to council

Provide an update directly to councillors on matters that concern you or your community. Presentation time is available on the first Wednesday of each month from 2.00pm. These sessions are more structured and must meet presentation guidelines. To request to present to council, visit South Gippsland Shire Council - Presenting to council website. Rates due on 15 February

Rates are due in full by 15 February 2026 for property owners who have not elected to pay by an instalment or payment plan. It is never too late for a personalised payment plan if you are behind.

If you need assistance, our friendly Rates team can be contacted on 5662 9200 or rates@southgippsland.vic.gov.au. Notices can be delivered by email if requested, For more information, visit the council's Rates page.

Free Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)Vaccines Available

Free MMR vaccines are available to anyone who may not have received two doses previously. Groups at risk include:

  • Anyone born during or after 1966 who does not have documented evidence of receiving two doses, or serological evidence of immunity
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
  • International migrants without documented vaccination history, including asylum seekers, refugees and international students
  • People travelling overseas or returning home to Australia - infants as young as six-months-old can have the vaccine prior to travel

No Medicare Card is required to access a free vaccination. To book in at one of council’s community immunisation sessions, visit South Gippsland .- Immunisation website.

What’s on South Gippsland

Korumburra's 130th Show

Come along to Korumburra and District Agricultural and Pastoral Society Inc.'s 130th Show. Featuring agricultural displays, food and market stalls, free kids activities, an exhibit pavilion, pygmy goats and more.

  • Where: Korumburra Show Grounds
  • When: Friday 13 February from 5.30pm to 9.30pm (fireworks at 9.15pm) and Saturday 14 February from 9.00am to 4.00pm

Foster Show

The 118th show is a classic mix of agricultural events and family-friendly entertainment, including dog high jump, wood chop, giant pumpkins, whip cracking, CWA cooking, best mullet and ferret racing!

South Gippsland Garlic Festival

A day of garlicky food and fun with live music, cooking demonstrations and kids entertainment.

Friends of Coal Creek Federation Cricket and Picnic Day

Come along for a picnic on the lawn at Coal Creek's oval, featuring cricket matches between local community groups, a sausage sizzle, coffee cart and traditional games including quoits, sack races and bean toss.

Community Grants Drop-in Sessions

The second round of community grants is now open for application until 31 March 2026. These grants support initiatives that enhance the quality of life, heritage, recreation and cultural opportunities for local residents. To assist with applications, council is hosting drop-in sessions with our Community Development staff:

  • Toora Library (Toora Community Hall) - Tuesday 17 Feb - 10.00am to 2.00pm
  • Mya Mya Café, Uniting Church, Poowong - Wednesday 18 Feb - 10.00am to 12.00pm
  • Mirboo North Library - Thursday 19 Feb - 12.00pm to 5.00pm
  • Venus Bay Community Centre - Wednesday 25 Feb - 12.30pm to 4.00pm

Funding is available for any Community Football Club’s affiliated with the AFL to support initiatives in the following three categories:

  • Grow and assist volunteer capacity
