Darren Chester urges Gippslanders to support local artisans, makers, and small businesses this holiday season

Federal Member Darren Chester encourages Gippslanders to shop local this Christmas, supporting artisans, makers, and small businesses like Emporium 3844, boosting the regional economy and celebrating community talent.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is urging Gippslanders to support local businesses this holiday season, including the many artisans, creators and small producers who contribute so much to the region’s economy and community spirit.

Celebrating local creativity

During a visit to Emporium 3844 in Traralgon, Mr Chester met with owner Rebecca Somerville and toured the new retail space, which has become a vibrant showcase for more than 80 local makers since opening in July.

"As we head into the Christmas season, it’s more important than ever to shop locally and support the small businesses and creators who make Gippsland such a special place. Emporium 3844 is a shining example of the creativity, dedication and resilience of local people, bringing together more than 80 small businesses under one roof and giving them a place to share their talents and reach new customers," Mr Chester said.

Supporting local makers

Mr Chester said Rebecca’s personal journey made the store even more meaningful. "As a cancer survivor, Rebecca has built Emporium 3844 with a mission grounded in community, healing and creativity. Her store is more than a business, it’s a gathering point for local makers and a celebration of Gippsland talent," he said.

Mr Chester encouraged Gippslanders to consider handmade and locally produced gifts when doing their Christmas shopping. "Every dollar spent locally helps support jobs, families and the future of our towns. Whether you’re buying a handmade candle, artwork, clothing or craft item, supporting local makers means your gift has a story and contributes directly to our regional economy. Let’s make this Christmas a season where we choose to back our local jobs," he said.
