By news@gippsland - 8th January 2026 - Back to News The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath, has criticised the Allan Labor government for the ongoing failure to fully restore the Thurra River Campground, with large sections still closed or unsafe almost six years after the 2019-20 bushfires. 
Although the Thurra River Bridge reopened, the campground is partially open, with limited facilities, debris, and reduced camping capacity affecting visitors and local benefits Campground recovery delayedWhile the Thurra River Bridge has reopened, the campground remains only partially operational. During a recent visit, Ms Bath found campsites open only until the end of January; just three portaloos installed, burnt BBQs and picnic tables left untouched and extensive debris with cordoned-off areas yet to be cleared. Camping capacity remains significantly reduced, limiting peak-season visitors and flow-on benefits for Cann River and surrounds. "Local families, campers and businesses are rightfully frustrated. This recovery has dragged on for far too long and the community is still waiting for a proper reopening. State government delays and a slow tender process have contributed to years of lost time, while the gap between announcements and on-ground reality keeps growing," Ms Bath said. Urgent park recoveryMs Bath is also Shadow Minister for Public Land Management and called on Labor to urgently replace burnt infrastructure, clear remaining debris, reopen safe areas and fast-track a proper reconstruction program so the campground is restored to the standard locals and visitors expect. "Local Parks Victoria staff have worked hard in difficult conditions to manage what’s in front of them but they can’t rebuild major facilities without the resourcing, approvals and urgency that only the government can provide. My colleague Tim Bull has worked relentlessly, backing the local community and pushing for progress at every step," she said. In addition, road access to Point Hicks is still being considered with news expected in 2026, while Cape Conran cabins are still in Bairnsdale, where they have sat for three years awaiting approval for relocation.
