Gippsland Lifesavers To Benefit From Coalition Funding

Gippsland lifesavers will benefit from a funding boost under a Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government, Nationals Member for Eastern Region Peter Hall said.

By Peter Hall - 18th November 2010 - Back to News

Mr Hall said the Coalition had announced a $7 million funding boost for Victorian surf lifesavers if elected this month.

"We have fantastic surf life saving clubs at Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Seaspray and Woodside who deserve government assistance to ensure they can provide the best possible operation for the people of this region," Mr Hall said.

A Coalition Government, if elected, would provide $6 million to fund upgrades to Life Saving Victoria clubhouses.

"Clubhouses are not only the base for local patrol operations of clubs across the state, they are the home for volunteers to train and learn as a group," Mr Hall said.

Mr Hall said interest in joining lifesaving clubs was growing and many did not have the capacity to cope with demand.

"The organisation is growing so quickly that some lifesaving clubs are being forced to turn away kids who want to get involved in the Nippers program," he said.

Mr Hall said the Coalition would boost the capacity of Life Saving Victoria by investing in its facilities and ensuring more people could take up lifesaving.

"Like other volunteer-based emergency service organisations, an increasing number of lifesaving volunteers are being bogged down by administrative duties," Mr Hall said.

"I believe the Coalition’s $7 million emergency services volunteer support package will help ease that administrative burden placed on lifesaving volunteers."

The Coalition will also provide $1 million for field-based administrators to support Life Saving Victoria volunteers and the organisation’s operations and growth.

Mr Hall said he looked forward to the opportunity of working with East Gippsland candidate Tim Bull in ensuring the region’s lifesavers received their fair share of Government assistance.

"This funding for Victorian lifesavers will give more Victorians an opportunity to learn valuable lifesaving skills and ensure more people stay safe in the water," Mr Hall said
