Keeping Baw Baw clean

Consider this: around 900,000 dogs living in Victoria produce about 90 tonnes of dog poo each day! Where does it go?

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News

Baw Baw Shire Council’s community compliance and education coordinator Ian Walk said councils across the state often bear the brunt of dog poo complaints.

"We have many dog owners who are sparkling role models in our community but there are still those who are seriously lacking in this critical area of responsible pet ownership.

"We have seen a major change in the behaviours of dog owners over the past ten years resulting from the state government's and our own responsible pet ownership program," said Mr Walk.

Under Baw Baw Shire Council local laws, dog owners must carry a facility for picking up dog poo when they are out walking and they must pick up the dog poo that is deposited.

The penalty for breaching either of these local laws is $107 each.

Dog droppings contain harmful bacteria and nutrients that can be washed through the stormwater system into natural waterways.

Faeces of infected puppies or adult dogs may contain the roundworm, Toxocara Canis, which can be passed onto humans with children and people who play on sports fields at the highest risk of infection.

Dogs, and pets, are an important part of many people's lives, with studies showing they bring physical and psychological health benefits to individuals and society as a whole.

"We need to work together to ensure that dogs and other pets have a place in the lives of those that choose to own them while not encroaching on the lives of those who don't.

"Picking up dog poo is a key part of responsible pet ownership," said Mr Walk.
