Council - Lease negotiations do not jeopardise Games bid

Latrobe City Council has strongly rejected claims that the Traralgon Basketball Stadiums bid to host Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games basketball matches could be in jeopardy as a result of ongoing lease negotiations with Basketball Stadiums Victoria

By Latrobe City Council - 26th February 2004 - Back to News

Basketball Stadiums Victoria and Council are currently seeking to reach a new lease agreement, for the future management of the Stadium.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock, said the Commonwealth Games basketball matches would not be affected by the outcome of those lease negotiations.

"The Victorian State Government has already committed $500,000 funding and Council has resolved to allocate $1Million from the 2004/2005 budget. Part of this resolution was to explore other funding sources as well to see if the Council contribution can be reduced, and we are doing this now," Mr Hancock said.

"The project which involves an upgrade and refurbishment of the facility, is not dependent on Basketball Stadiums Victoria being the stadium manager."

Mr Hancock explained that a project control group comprising representatives from the Office of the Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006, State Department of Sport and Recreation and Council officers had been established to oversee the refurbishment project.

"The first step in progressing the project is the appointment of a project manager by the project control group. It is expected that such appointment will be made in the very near future," Mr Hancock said.

"The Office of the Commonwealth Games requires the project to be completed before October 2005 to enable appropriate event planning to occur.

"The timeframe for completion of the project is not affected by negotiations currently being pursued with Basketball Stadiums Victoria," Mr Hancock stressed.

"Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said Council was excited at the prospect of Commonwealth Games basketball matches taking place in the municipality. "Council will not be pressured to abandon good governance practices when there is clearly no link between future management of the Traralgon Basketball Stadium and the Commonwealth Games basketball matches.

"Whatever decision Council makes in respect of the future management of the centre will not impact on the refurbishment project, nor on the conduct of Commonwealth Games basketball matches at the Stadium," Cr Middlemiss said.
