Hall’s Road Safety Message For Easter

The Nationals’ Member for Gippsland Province PETER HALL, has issued a warning to constituents and all Victorians to pay particular attention to road safety over the Easter holidays.

By Peter Hall - 22nd March 2005 - Back to News

Mr Hall said that despite repeated messages throughout the year, some people still seem to feel that accidents can’t or won’t happen to them.

"However, the statistics tell us otherwise, the road toll is not just a statistic. It involves sudden loss, pain, suffering and financial hardship. It changes the lives of thousands of Australian families forever

"In addition to the enormous emotional strain of road crashes, poor road safety is also an enormous economic burden for our nation. Each and every day, we waste more than $40 million on road crashes. There is on average $11 million worth damage done to vehicles each day, $6.4 million spent on medical costs and $5.3 million in lost productivity in the workplace."

Road users can contribute by acting more responsibly and eliminating the dangers of drink driving, speeding, failing to wear seatbelts and driving when tired.

Mr Hall urges travellers to call in and take a coffee at coffee stops which are set up along the major highways. A ten minute stop can make all the difference in keeping drivers refreshed, alert, and in control of their vehicle.

"The hundreds of volunteers who give up their time during the Easter holiday to man the coffee stops are to be commended, as they do a terrific job and help many people get to their destinations safely.

Mr Hall wishes his constituents a safe and happy Easter.
