Mayor Welcomes Prompt Road Response

East Gippsland Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said she was absolutely delighted at news the State Government is prepared to contribute $2 million towards upgrading and sealing the 31 kilometres of road between Omeo and Falls Creek.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 27th May 2005 - Back to News

"The Premier, Steve Bracks has truly ‘seized the moment,’ she said.

"This is great news and gives the project a massive ‘kick start’."

Cr Rowe was a member of the delegation from the East Gippsland and Alpine Shire Councils that recently asked the Federal Minister for Local Government and Roads, Jim Lloyd to also contribute a $2 million share of the $6.5 million needed to seal the Bogong High Plains Road.

"The State Government has been quick to realise that this is a very good investment in regional infrastructure as the project will generate tourism and generate a net economic benefit of approximately $37 million annually," she said.

Cr Rowe said the opportunity to seal the road at a realistic price has followed the announcement by energy supplier Southern Hydro that it plans to construct a power station on leased land within the Alpine National Park.

"Large quantities of rock will be removed during the tunneling works for their project and Southern Hydro has offered this rock free for use in the road sealing," she said.

"This represents a cost saving in the vicinity of $1.8m."

CEO Steve Kozlowski said he was greatly encouraged by the response from the State Government.

"If we can now bring the Federal government on board it will be an excellent example of how co-operation between all levels of government and the private sector can achieve a magnificent and much wanted result," he said.

Alpine Regional Tourism, Mt Hotham Resort Management Board, Omeo Business and Tourism Association, Vic Roads, Regional Development Victoria, Mt Beauty Discovery Centre Country Fire Authority’s Region 11 and other key bodies are also supporting the funding move.
