Can You Help Council Put Geography On The Map?

To celebrate World Geography Awareness Week, Latrobe City Council is hosting a three-day event from 16 to 18 November at the Traralgon Court House.

By Latrobe City - 13th September 2011 - Back to News

This event is designed to promote the use and understanding of geography and geographic information systems (GIS) in the wider community. The GIS team at Latrobe City Council is looking for community groups, organisations and geography enthusiasts to help make the event a success.

Latrobe City’s GIS coordinator, Nabil Salibi, said that geography impacts daily life in a number of ways and that the event would raise awareness of geography and GIS applications and tools that are freely available to the community.

"We want to involve the wider community in our bid to make this event a success. The event is an educational opportunity, and as such we are looking for information displays, video and photographic displays, historic maps, surveying artefacts, educational information, anything that is related to geography and helps promote the importance of geography.

"The reality is that using geography and GIS can help businesses and the wider community to plan, organise, connect and communicate. There are many applications to ensure that spatial data, detailed analysis and location information can be recorded, utilised and included for community and business needs," Mr Salibi explained.

"We hope to attract displays from community groups, historical societies, educational institutes and commercial entities that use geographic information to help create the event. We are also seeking representatives from the spatial industry to showcase their work and how they contribute to and use geographic information.

"If you belong to an organisation that would like to have a display, we would love to hear from you. The event is free to exhibitors and attendees," Mr Salibi concluded.
