Bees have been long term contributors to the development of Gippsland. In the South Gippsland area, honey is collected mainly from Clover flowers in pastures and from Coastal and Saw Banksias along the coastline. Apiarists are increasingly being sought for pollination of crops such as apples strawberries and blueberries. The quality and quantity of fruit is much better when bees are used for pollination.

Members of the public and beekeepers can find out more about the gentle art of beekeeping at a Bee Keeping Field day at the Old Koonwarra School, (the Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre) on Saturday the 5th of March between 10am and 3pm. The Field Day is run by the Gippsland Apiarists Association and is timed to coincide with the Koonwarra Farmer's Market.

Items on the program during the day will include basic hive construction, opening a working colony and locating the queen, brood inspection and the splitting of a hive. During the day there will be several hives re-queened and attendees will see how to artificially create a swarm. Honey uncapping and extraction will also be carried out. There will be a honey-sampling table with a range of local honeys to taste as well as honey and other hive products for sale.

Local Department of Primary Industries Apiary Inspector, Ray Gribbin will be available to answer questions and help beekeepers with any problems they may have.

The various components of the program will be repeated throughout the day allowing plenty of opportunity to catch items of interest.

The day will be fully catered with hot and cold drinks and a BBQ. There will be a $5 entry charge for adults, (children admitted free). A lucky prize as well as the raffle of numerous prizes will be drawn on the day.
