Wellington Shire Council has scored yet another sports coup for Gippsland, as it is to host its second major pre-season Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) tournament featuring top Australian teams.

The Southern Cross 10 and Nylex Women's National Basketball League Pre-Season Tournament will be staged from Friday 17 - Sunday 19 September at the state-of-the-art Bishop Phelan Stadium in Sale, with Heyfield and Maffra also hosting games.

Crowds can look forward to a fast-paced weekend of first-rate basketball action when national teams including Bulleen, Adelaide, Dandenong, Sydney, and the Australian Institute of Sport hit the court in the nine game tournament.

It is also Gippsland’s chance to catch ‘local' girls in action including Athens’ Olympics Sliver Medallist Belinda Snell, who plays for the Sydney Flames. Traralgon’s Desiree Glaubitz who suits up for the Bulleen Boomers will also be there. Other big names featuring on the tournament’s roster include Dandenong Ranges’ guard Jessica Bibby and Bulleen Boomers’ centre Hollie Grima.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "The council is delighted to have the opportunity to build on the success of last year’s pre-season tournament. This event offers the Wellington community and our younger, up-and-coming basketball players, the chance to experience, and learn from, these elite athletes. An event of this nature will also inject a welcome financial boost into the local economy and benefit the shire’s tourism."

A full game roster with tip-off times is available from the OA Ruff Sports Stadium, the Lex Glover Swimming Complex, the shire’s libraries and service centres. It can also be downloaded from the council’s website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. For further information please telephone Wellington Shire Council’s Administration & Marketing Co-ordinator for Leisure, Russell Thomas on 5142 3432.
