Residents To Be Surveyed On Waste Disposal

East Gippsland residents are about to receive a survey form on which they can nominate their preferences for future waste collection throughout the region.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 28th April 2006 - Back to News

From tomorrow East Gippsland Shire will begin sending a leaflet to almost 16,000 residences that currently has waste collection that explains the options that could be available

Householders will be asked to simply tick the boxes that relate to their preferences and use the reply paid envelop to return the tear off survey form.

Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said the survey follows a recent council decision to review current waste collection and establish a plan for the future.

"We are particularly interested to see the strength of the demand for a third bin exclusively for green waste," she said.

"Also, we are keen to know whether, if a green waste bin was introduced, all residents would be prepared to use a smaller 120 litre bin for normal household waste."

Council currently provides household waste collection services to almost 16,000 residences with almost 15,000 of these also receiving recycling collection.

The recycling service introduced to Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance in 2000 has been successful in diverting thousands of tonnes of waste from traditional landfills.

Over the period it has been expanded to the townships of Orbost, Marlo, Newmerella, Cabbage Tree, Cann River, Genoa and Mallacoota.

Cr Rowe said Council was keen to examine the viability of diverting green waste from landfills.

"We would be very pleased if people could spare a few moments to answer the questions in the survey so their views can be fully considered," she said.
