Council plans for domestic waste waterWellington Shire Council is calling for public comment on its Municipal Domestic Wastewater Management Plan. By Wellington Shire Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News Allan Watson, Wellington Shire Council Environmental Health Co-ordinator said the Draft plan helps to addresses the potential risks to public health and the environment that can result from the treatment and disposal of domestic wastewater.
"It is very important that waste water is managed correctly. The plan outlines ways we will do this" said Mr Watson.
Local governments are required through state environment protection policies to prepare a management plan.
"We have worked with East Gippsland Shire Council to produce a plan for both of our municipalities with support from Department of Sustainability and Environment.
"Council has also sought information from other agencies including local water boards, catchments management authorities and the Environmental Protection Authority" said Mr Watson.
Some key objectives of the plan include-
- improve management of domestic wastewater and septic tank systems
- improve community awareness of waste water options in unsewered areas
- consider the need for a domestic wastewater management levy
Information obtained during the creation of the plan will also be very valuable to council and other authorities.
"The information gathered will not only help us and reduce any risks to health or to the environment it will also help us determine our waste water action priorities for the future" said Mr Watson.
The Municipal Domestic Wastewater Management Plan is available on the council website www.wellington.vic.gov.au or by contacting Wellington Shire Council 1300 366 244. Comments can be made before Friday 18 August 2006.
