Workshop To Cut Planning Red Tape

The State government is holding a workshop for planners, community members and interested stakeholders to investigate whether ‘Code Assess’ will help cut red tape in planning.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 5th May 2006 - Back to News

‘Code Assess’ is one of the six options being explored by the State government to see if it offers a simpler assessment and approval process for the Victorian planning system.

Under ‘Code Assess’, an expert assessor (either from council or a consultancy) would assess developments against objective criteria and performance standards set within the council planning scheme.

It has been widely publicised that the State government is conducting a review to streamline the planning process.

The cutting of unnecessary processes would benefit local councils, community members, developers and such industry professionals as architects and designers.

The workshop will be held on Friday, 19 May from 3-5pm at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (corner Spring St and Victoria Pde, Melbourne).

Speaking at the workshop will be:

· Peter Allen, Executive Director Statutory Systems, Department of Sustainability and Environment;

· Jacqui Lavis, Director Statutory Planning and Development Services, ACT Planning and Land Authority;

· Lester Townsend, Senior Panel Member, Planning Panels Victoria; and

· Michael Nelthorpe, Manager City Development, Hume City Council.

The cost of the workshop is free. To attend please RSVP by Monday, 15 May to Lisel Thomas on phone (03) 9637 9585 or email lisel.thomas@dse.vic.gov.au.

More information about 'Code Assess' and the leading practice model is available on the Development Assessment Forum website at www.daf.gov.au.
