Ingram to meet on RMIT concerns

Gippsland East Independent MP, Craig Ingram, will meet with RMIT this week to discuss the future of the university's research facility at Bullock Island near Lakes Entrance.

By Craig Ingram - 28th August 2006 - Back to News

The research facility at Bullock Island is co-located with the East Gippsland Institute of TAFE's South East Australia Maritime Education Centre (SEAMEC). Research studies are being undertaken on aquaculture and water quality.

"It is incredibly important for our region that $4 million be invested into this facility," Mr Ingram told Parliament recently.

"When the facility was established it had teething problems and the scientists employed there could not actually apply for the grants they needed. RMIT is now saying the facility has to be self-funding, which means that scientists are at the mercy of research funding institutes."

Mr Ingram said that he had previously written to RMIT University and the responsible state and federal ministers on the issue, but the issue remained unresolved.

"There was a degree of handballing between the State and Federal governments, which is disappointing," Mr Ingram said.

"I will meet with RMIT and EG TAFE in Melbourne to discuss options to keep the marine science research at Bullock Island," he concluded.
