The Paris End: Photography, Fashion And GlamourOpening this Friday 9 March at 6.30pm at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, will be the glamorous ‘The Paris End: Photography, Fashion and Glamour’ from the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). By Latrobe City Council - 20th March 2007 - Back to News This exhibition brings together commercial and fashion photography from the 1900s to the 1950s reflecting the changing face of Melbourne.
Latrobe Regional Gallery director, Jacqui Hemsley said that during the first decades of the twentieth century the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street, as it was affectionately known, was a popular home to the artistic community of Melbourne.
"Many artists, musicians, writers and theatre performers lived and worked at the top end of town. A number of Melbourne’s leading photographers including Athol Shmith, Jack Cato, Julian Smith, May and Mina Moore, Ruth Hollick and Wolfgang Sievers also established studios in this thriving arts precinct," Ms Hemsley explained.
"To celebrate the start of this exhibition, there will be a glamour opening on Friday 9 March at 6.30pm, featuring a selection of fantasy hats by local master milliner - Carolyn Schoo.
"Each milliner has a defining 'signature' style, and Carolyn's creations reflect her love of things theatrical - that being the abundant use of feathers and flowers and incorporating unusual fabrics and trims.
"Her hand-made designs are one-of-a-kind that complement the wearer's outfit - with special consideration given to face shape and colouring - and she encourages her clients to try styles that are a little adventurous or different from those they would normally choose," Ms Hemsley said.
"Also featuring at the opening celebration will be the graduating outfits by GippsTAFE Morwell Campus fashion students from the last couple of years.
"The opening is a free event and we would encourage all art lovers to attend," Ms Hemsley added.
On Tuesday 3 April at 1.30pm at the Gallery, there will be a Paris End curator talk by Susan Van Wyk, Curator of Photography NGV. Cost is $5 non-member, $2 concession, and Friends members are free.
Touring from the National Gallery of Victoria, this exhibition will run until Sunday 22 April.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am – 4pm. Admission is free.
