Special Charge Scheme To Construct Bredt Street

East Gippsland Shire Councillors last night agreed to begin the processes for a Special Charge Scheme to fund 70 percent the cost of constructing approximately 195 metres of Bredt Street (north of Pope Street) in Bairnsdale.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 27th July 2005 - Back to News

Councillors voted to accept a recommendation that a Special Charge is declared to defray expenses incurred for the construction work.

Ratepayers will contribute almost $94,000 of the total cost of just under $134,000.

Councillors also agreed to provide full funding of $40,000 for the construction of a two metre wide shared pathway within the Bredt Street road reserve between Drevermann Street and the Mitchell River at the time Bredt Street is upgraded.

Bredt Street provides a key pedestrian/cycle link between the residential area of West Bairnsdale and the popular shared pathway along the southern bank of the Mitchell River.

The decision to proceed with the work follows a public meeting held in May and attended by fourteen Brendt St residents to consider the special charge scheme.

Councillors were told that while residents support construction of Bredt Street there was some concern at the level of their 70 percent contribution. They were also advised that the September 2004 Ministerial Guidelines for Special Rates and Charges were used to calculate the apportionment between both parties and that the 30 percent contribution by Council is appropriate.

The Special Charge Scheme will affect fourteen properties with ratepayer contributions ranging from $1500 to $15,000 for the upgrade.
