Council Alliance Raises GERF FundsA charity auction held in conjunction with the launch of the Yarra City – Wellington Shire Council Rural/Urban Alliance has raised more than $6,500 for the Gippsland emergency relief Fund (GERF). By Wellington Shire Council - 26th November 2007 - Back to News The Rural /Urban Alliance links the City of Yarra, a geographically small inner-Melbourne municipality and Wellington Shire Council, a large rural municipality.
"The partnership will allow for staff exchanges, the sharing of information between our two municipalities, the development of joint ventures and the promotion of the tourism, business and community opportunities for the councils," said Cr Beth Ripper, Wellington Shire Council Mayor.
A Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two municipalities will encourage the local governments to share ideas in many common areas including the areas of strategic planning, heritage protection, tourism, arts, youth services and multiculturalism.
Approximately 60 people from both Yarra and Wellington attended the recent launch of the Rural/Urban Alliance in Richmond and participated in a fund raising auction.
Businesses and individuals from the two municipalities donated goods for the auction. Vigorous bidding brought the total raised on the night to $6 560 which will be donated to GERF for flood and fire relief.
"This was an excellent result for the night and provided a very practical element to the new Alliance.
"The many people who generously donated items for the auction deserve the sincere thanks of the community," said Cr Ripper.
