The Chief Executive Officer of the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, Mr Geoff Hocking said "the West Gippsland RHS sets the vision for the management of our river systems across West Gippsland and will be a valuable guide for all agencies, stakeholders, industry and community members who have a vested interest in the health of our river systems".

The RHS aims to protect environmental, social and economic values of river channels, riparian zones, floodplains, floodplain wetlands and the estuary and terminal lake areas within the Thomson, Latrobe and South Gippsland river basins.

The purpose of the RHS is to protect the highest value (environmental, social and economic) river reaches across West Gippsland as determined by the local community and supported by technical and scientific data. "Of particular importance for the West Gippsland region is the protection of the valuable Gippsland Lakes and South Gippsland coastal environments, in particular the Corner Inlet and Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park, through targeted on ground activities throughout the West Gippsland catchment" Mr Hocking said.

The RHS identifies priority river reaches for protection and restoration and plans out specific on ground activities to be implemented over the coming 5 years to ensure the protection of environmental, social and economic values in these priority areas. Mr Hocking was quoted as saying that "the success of the RHS relies on agencies, stakeholders, industry and community groups and representatives’ working in partnership to implement management action plans for the identified priority river reaches".

The development of the RHS has been influenced by a range of stakeholders, agency and community representatives. The RHS is now available in a public exposure draft format on the WGCMA website www.wgcma.vic.gov.au. Members of the community are encouraged to review this document and provide feedback to Kylie Debono, Project Officer – River Health via e-mail kylied@wgcma.vic.gov.au or phone 5175 7800.
