Walk safe over summer

Over the summer holidays most people expect to see an increasing number of cars on our roads. But the influx of visitors also means there will be more people out walking.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon is keen to make sure people are aware of the higher number of pedestrians.

"We know most motorists are aware that over summer there is a huge amount of pedestrian traffic in the major centres, and Cowes in particular," said Mr Laydon.

"We’d just like to remind drivers to slow down and take care in those areas."

Mr Laydon said Council had a portable RoadSafe sign warning motorists to be aware of pedestrians. This sign will be located in Cowes over the holiday period.

"While the major centres will certainly be very busy over the summer, many of the residential areas of the shire pose a high risk for pedestrians as well," Mr Laydon advised.

"We have a lot of poorly lit areas in the estates, where pedestrians are not clearly visible.

"Many of the estates also do not have footpaths, so there is the potential for pedestrians to be walking along the roadside."

Mr Laydon urged motorists to take extra care and observe the speed limits in all townships and estates across the Shire.

Linfox vcat appeal to be heard in 2007

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has held a preliminary hearing regarding an appeal by Linfox Property Group against a Bass Coast Shire Council decision.

In September this year, the Council decided not to grant a permit to the group to build a proposed 506 villas and golf course on land next to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

Council’s Planning and Environment Director, Andrew Mason said the hearing last week was an initial meeting to sort out how and when the appeal would go ahead.

"A number of objectors to the proposal attended, including the Phillip Island Conservation Society and Smiths Beachcomber Association.

"The Tribunal indicated that a full hearing was likely to happen in April," said Mr Mason.

"At least part of the hearing will be held on Phillip Island.

"The final dates and locations will be decided by the Tribunal at the end of February."

Mr Mason also advised that Linfox Property Group had indicated they may submit changed plans.

"This would mean the appeal would be based on any revised plans, which may have differences in things like the villa and golf course layout, building design, etc.

"However, any revised plans must be supplied to us and any objectors at least 20 days before the hearing," Mr Mason finished.

Vehicle safety checks

Bass Coast Shire Council will be holding a vehicle safety check day in Wonthaggi on Sunday 10 December.

The safety check is a SafeRoads/RoadSafe initiative, supported by the Wonthaggi Rotary Club.

Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon said everyone was invited to bring their car to the Rotary Market for a free five point safety check.

"Keeping people safe on our roads is a major priority.

"It’s not enough to just focus on driver education. We need to make sure that the vehicles on our roads aren’t a safety risk," said Mr Laydon.

The safety check will cover tyres, brakes, windscreen, steering and lights.

Mr Laydon said a number of local businesses had joined with Council in this initiative.

"The businesses have agreed to provide a discount on all items that are detected during the check.

"The discounts will be valid until 31 January 2007," said Mr Laydon.

"We hope this will provide an incentive to people to get their cars fixed.

"We all need to work together to keep our roads safe over the holidays," Mr Laydon continued.

A day to Recognise our volunteers

Tuesday 5 December is International Volunteer Day.

In Australia this day has been designated as an opportunity to recognise and celebrate volunteer involvement in the community.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin said Council would recognise its volunteers with various celebrations, such as a lunch or morning tea.

"We have over 100 volunteers that support our community transport service, frail aged and disabled planned activity groups, Visitor Information Centres, the Walking School Bus Program and various support committees.

"I know that without the dedication of our volunteer staff, we wouldn’t be able to offer the services we do.

"They make an invaluable contribution and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you," said Cr Goodwin.

For more information on how you can become a volunteer phone Council on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.
