Family of Harry Wright demands action on crime after his tragic death in Morwell home

The family of Harry Wright, who tragically died in his Morwell home, is demanding government action on rising regional crime. Member for Morwell Martin Cameron supports their call for improved community safety measures.

The family of beloved Morwell man Harry Wright, who died tragically in his home last week, has demanded action from the State Government on the crime wave sweeping regional Victoria. Seeking support from The Nationals' Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, Mr Wright's family shared their insurmountable grief after the 91-year-old died senselessly inside his Maryvale Road home.

Crime and community safety

Mr Cameron said, "Harry was a much-loved member of the Morwell Bowls Club, a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and was just about to set sail on his dream cruise. Harry's untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community, and his family is mourning a wonderful man who was a real gentle giant."

Police located a 42-year-old man nearby Mr Wright's home, and he has been charged with aggravated burglary and was remanded in custody. "It's not for me to comment on Harry's death, which is currently under investigation, and I certainly don't want to politicise this tragedy. But something's got to give, and this must serve as a line in the sand, because the fact is that people are living in fear and don't feel safe in their own homes."

"The Latrobe local government area has the highest rate of criminal incidents in Victoria outside of metropolitan Melbourne. Not enough is being done to address rising crime which has been exacerbated by over 1000 vacancies in Victoria Police, weakened bail laws, and scrapping of the Minister for Crime Prevention. Residents feel scared, and the State Government must start listening to Victorian communities and prioritising their safety," Mr Cameron said.
