Community Groups Learn About Leadership

Around one hundred local community group members attended Latrobe City’s Leadership ‘Inside-out’ Community Groups Forum at the Waratah Restaurant in Morwell recently.

By Latrobe City - 16th March 2012 - Back to News

The forum was developed and delivered by the Centre for Leadership and Management.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the program of community group forums was aimed at bringing community groups together on a regular basis to allow them to share ideas and information as well as learning new skills.

"At this particular forum, the community group members reviewed leadership skills, capabilities and styles as well as developing skills on how best to apply this to leadership within communities and community organisations.

"They explored what people look for in leadership and key approaches to leadership. Participants took part in discussions which allowed them to network as well as sharing perspectives and experiences," Cr Vermeulen said.

Cr Vermeulen added that the event was held at the Waratah Restaurant allowing GippsTAFE hospitality students to support the event as part of their own skill development.

"These events are a great way of upskilling the community; volunteers who give their time to be part of community groups and organisations need to understand the environment in which their group operates, be aware of their obligations and drive support within the wider community for their particular organisation.

"I would encourage all community groups to get in touch with Latrobe City’s community development team to find out what forums are scheduled and avail themselves of the free skill development that could enhance their group," Cr Vermeulen concluded.

The forum was part of Latrobe City’s Community Groups Information and Training Program which is provided free to the community. Regular sessions throughout the year cover various topics relating to community groups roles and responsibilities.

The next training forum to be delivered will be Understanding Food Handling in Community Groups, to be held at Century Inn, Traralgon on Wednesday 18 April 2012. This forum is free to the community and light refreshments will be provided.
