Gippsland Water receives wastewater for emergency storage

Gippsland Water is receiving wastewater from United Group Infrastructure (UGI) for storage in its emergency storage facility at Maffra. This wastewater has the potential to cause odours whilst it is being stored at Gippsland Water’s facilities.

The wastewater generated by the factory at Murray Goulburn’s Maffra operations is currently treated by UGI. This treatment plant is diverting a portion of wastewater to Gippsland Water’s emergency lagoons during its recovery, following a recent inflow event from the factory’s operations.

This wastewater may contain some organic material that may have the potential to cause odours. Gippsland Water is aerating this wastewater in its lagoons, to minimise the risks of these odours occurring, prior to being returned to UGI for further treatment.

Gippsland Water Chief Executive Officer, John Mitchell said, "Gippsland Water will continue to work with UGI to ensure the risks of odours produced during this time are minimised.

"We apologise to the Maffra community for any odours generated during this time and thank the community for their patience and support. Plant operation issues such as this re-emphasise the importance of having emergency storage facilities. These facilities allow companies, such as Murray Goulburn, to continue with its processes with limited disruption."

Murray Goulburn Maffra Branch Manager, Brad Stokell says, "Murray Goulburn has used UGI’s expertise as an effluent treatment contractor for several years, and we remain confident the current situation will be managed in a timely fashion."

It is anticipated that wastewater in the Gippsland Water lagoon system will continue to be diverted by UGI for at least the next one to two weeks.
